Report

On January 2, 2026, at 7:04 a.m. PST, I started at the Garita Central Peatonal in Mexicali, BCN Mexico running south, traveling on foot the entire length of the Baja peninsula. I completed this route under my own power aided by the support of a crew vehicle and two crew members. I traveled along the primary Highway routes south (as described in the route summary) over the course of 38 days, 5 hours, 52 minutes, and 39 seconds. I finished at El Medano beach in Cabo San Lucas, BCS Mexico, on February 9, 2026, at 1:52 p.m. GMT. I traveled almost primarily in daylight hours (I ran into the dark by headlamp a couple evenings) and slept at night, returning exactly to the last point in route the following morning to continue on. I carried on me at all times of progress in route, a Garmin InReach mini2, a Garmin fénix 6 Pro, and an iPhone 12 in order to track and verify my location and movement. The crew had satellite internet connection using a Starlink Mini to which I was able to connect via WIFi when in proximity. This provided Garmin Connect Livetrack, which was shared on multiple social media platforms and utilized by project followers, reporters, and safety crews throughout the duration of the route. I often used a running vest to carry hydration flasks, nutrition, tracker, and other compulsory items and running poles were used at varying times. The team provided supplemental nutrition and hydration they procured along the way, along with coordinating with various local organizations to secure lodging, security, and public relations for the project. At a few locations along the route, several people joined me in running small sections in support of the cause that was highlighted throughout this project. While this peninsula is sea level along its perimeter, the route crosses back and forth from the east and west coasts several times, navigating the elevations of its mountainous backbone. The grades to ascend and descend are greater than may be expected. The passage through an open dessert can also be deceptively narrow along much of the route, allowing little room for error between the athlete and other traffic.

This route was both physically taxing and logistically difficult. Despite these challenges, the landscape, views, and people are an experience unlike any other.

Even though the goal time of 30 days I set for myself was not met, I would consider this one of the greatest adventure challenges of my life. I look forward to seeing another person attempt and potentially set a new FKT.
