Needed a local(ish) 30-40 mile long run, so visited the Long Distance Footpath Directory and found this one - there is a choice of two finishes, the passenger ferry across the Tyne or the Pedestrian foot tunnel.  Opted for the pedestrian tunnel under the Tyne finish as it felt like the right thing to do, I did the route north to south.  Adding a couple of miles felt like it might be quicker than waiting for the ferry, but I don't know how regular they are, so definitely research if you want to do that finish.  Had my hubby as a support crew, and he met me at miles 10, 20, 30 and the finish.  The terrain is a real mix of road, cycle path, gravel path, fields, and some tough sections of sand dunes in the northern half of the course.  Real mix of scenery from wide sandy beaches, little harbours, industrial areas, and lovely little seaside towns.  Plenty of options for a self supported runner as lots of kiosks, garages and shops either directly on the course or just off it.  This attempt was on a fairly hot day so I was glad of the support for water refills. (no idea how I resisted the many, many ice cream vans on the sea fronts).  I Tripped and fell at around 14 miles so wasted a bit of time patching up a few minor cuts and bruises (no major damage), otherwise no real dramas.  A really enjoyable day out, and a very pretty finish location at St Pauls Church and Monastery in Jarrow.
