The Way of the Sea is 62 kilometres or 38.5 miles in length. You may occasionally find Northern Saints Trails signs, but this route is the same as the England Coast Path all the way from Warkworth to North Shields so one can follow the ECP signs which are frequent. Sometimes the may ben acorn symol as the ECP is one of the National Trails. There are also Northumberland Coast Path signs between Warkworth and Cresswell. The coastal path itself generally stays on the higher ground, but in some places such as Druridge or Whitley bays you may prefer to walk on the sand.

The original route calls for a ferry to be taken between North and South Shields in the final section of the route. An alternate route requiring use of the pedestrian Tyne tunnel is to be used as this is more 'pedestrian'.

Section 1 Warkworth to Druridge Bay Visitor Centre 10k - 6 miles

Section 2 Druridge Bay Visitor Centre to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea 14k - 8.5 miles

Section 3 Newbiggin-by-the-Sea to Blyth 16k - 9.5 miles

Section 4 Blyth to Whitley Bay 11k - 7 miles

Section 5 Whitley Bay to Jarrow 12k - 7.5 miles

It is my intention to run this route on Friday 9th August 2024. I intend to run the route heading Southwards. I will take the pedestrian tunnel to cross the river Tyne and end at Jarrow.
