A beautiful cool morning for a long distance run. Started at Vela Luka at the beach and steadily climbed up an over the first big hill until the Port of Vela Luka. Ran through the peaceful and sleepy Adriatic village and then increased elevation until the vineyards and steadily ran on an improved trail for 5 miles. Ran on route 118 for a bit until the North turnoff. This portion was a steady elevation gain on another improved trail until you reach the intersection of a small dirt road on the North side in the vicinity of Zukova. For about 10 miles it is very isolated but tremendous views as you run along the coast going up and down over the ridges that come down from the mountain. This side of the island was hotter and the heat coming off the crushed limestone built steadily. The nice part was the isolation and quiet. After the quiet stretch you come upon Babina a small coastal village. After this point it is a series of steep up and downs along the coast and it becomes less isolated and villages become closer together. You pass through Racisce, Kneza and my favorite Zrnovska Banja. At this point it is a handful of miles to the outskirts of Korcula Town. The route goes through the most scenic part along the water and ends at the Aminess Hotel.
This is a tough course. Between the distance, the 4.8 K elevation gain and the periods of isolation, you should be fully prepared to support yourself. I was fortunate to have had two manned water/food points that were where they were supposed to be. It is very easy to get into a situation where your support fails to be at the designated spot. Cell coverage is spotty to none at all on portions of the course. Villages on the map between Vela Luka and Kneza are basically a grouping of houses so there is no chance of water or food for 2/3's of the course.
Highly recommended for the natural beauty, history and the challenge.
