After a recon loop earlier in February, I set a date following some recent snows so that water would be available and temps were still Spring-ish (for Tucson). Targetting a sub-12hr loop, I set out from Gordon Hirabyashi Campground at 6:45am with enough daylight to not need a waist light. The ascent went mostly according to plan except for a long section of trails on the backside of the Catalinas that had very slippery snow and some mud, which was also complicated by a few horses that had been through and left postholes... all slowing me down as I approached the Control Rd climb to Summerhaven. After grabbing water from the Public Community Center, as headed down the Mountain and passed another runner attempting his own FKT in the Wilderness Of Rock area. I quickly dropped him and realized that I would need to push the last 10 miles to keep under the 12 hour goal. After quickly grabbing water from Sabino Creek and filtering on the go, I settled into whatever pace I could push after a day of running. I arrived at the end with a time of 11hrs 54min 31sec with a new Unsupported FKT (11:54:30 watch time).
