FKT attempt on the length of Padre Island National Seashore from North to South. Pretty nice cross-tail wind (20 knot? N-NW) that decreased throughout the run. The temperature started at around 50 deg F (10 C) and maybe got up to 65 deg F (18 C). I started at the northern bollards in the dark, a little before 5 am. Awesome stars and twilight. Surface conditions were ideal for the first ~35 miles (pretty hard packed and wide), then I had to run further up the beach as the tide came in where it was a little lumpy and soft. I'm very thankful for support from Linda Reed and Rachael Blair, who drove along and checked on me every 5-10 miles, and transported my food and drink. I used one hydration vest for ~30 miles (~1.5 L) and a second vest for ~20 miles (~1.5 L), and then a handheld bottle for the last ~15 miles, refilling every ~5 miles. Rachael ran with me for 15 miles in the middle (miles 30-45). The beach wasn’t very busy. Not much wildlife or interesting debris to report. I ran with a well worn-in pair of Hoka Mach5 shoes. Towards the end, I wished they had a bit more spring in them. I felt pretty good for most of the run but was definitely happy to stop at the end. All-in-all, a pretty good day for running though.
