Despite being opening day of the rifle deer season, I decided to hunt an FKT instead. I filled out my BWCA entry permit and took off clad in a blaze orange hat and neon running shorts. I threw a few gummy worms in my vest for fuel and took 600ml of water. It was about 21F when I started and a few flurries were falling. It took a few miles to warm up but was pretty comfortable after that. The trail was largely in good shape and well marked with cairns. A few fallen trees and a dusting of snow on the trail made it a little difficult to follow at a few points (especially between the turnoff to Little Vermillion and Herriman Lake). At one point the trail crossed a creek on the top of a beaver dam and the skim ice made fun popping sounds as I crossed which was pretty neat. Otherwise it was a gorgeous and relatively uneventful run. I didn't kick up a single grouse or come across a deer. I got back to the car in 1:29:20 to take the FKT.
