Trying to escape a heat wave, I set off on this run just after 5:30 in the morning. It quickly warmed up, and even at 11,500 feet the temperature was approaching 80 degrees. The mosquitoes were horrific, but they made for great pacers since I had to keep a brisk pace to outrun them. I jumped in a few swimming holes along the Merced to cool off, had a near miss with a rattlesnake above Little Yosemite Valley, and made it back to the car just before dark.
