Description

Ball Pass is a historic and iconic route in Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park.

Traditionally the crossing starts from Hooker Valley carpark and finishes at Tasman Lakes carpark.

Route starts on the popular walking track to Hooker Lake, then around the edge of the lake past several slips, to the base of the major climb. Ascend a rocky gully to the "Playing Fields". Climb up and around a spur to access the upper basin. Climb over the Ball Pass via some snow slopes that exist into late summer. Microspikes and light axe is normally sufficient. Descend the ridge to Caroline hut and Ball hut and return via the Ball Hut track and road. Note the Husky Slip bypass track to your right.

A fantastic alpine run with magnificent views of NZ's highest peaks, well worth the effort.
