The Barnegat Out & Back is a running route covering the length of Long Beach Island out and back starting from and ending at the lighthouse at the Island's North point. Start the route by touching the lighthouse. From there, run to the South end of the island and touch the sand at the end of the parking lot (end of S Long Beach Blvd.). Run back to Barnegat and touch the lighthouse again to complete the route. Extra credit if you finish when the lighthouse is open and climb to the top on tired legs!
Running in a straight line down the island is possible but involves running on busy portions of the main road. You can tack on an extra half mile or so and run on less trafficked roads by taking 24th Street up to N Central Ave and rejoining Long Beach Blvd. by following the road to it's natural end at the intersection of W 28th St. There are other options to run on more residential streets further down the Island but this diversion takes you around the main entry point to the island and avoids a lot of congestion.
