Description

Big Chiwaukum is the high point of the Chiwaukum Mountains, tucked between the Enchantments and Stevens Pass – an alpine scramble with beautiful views, without the major crowds of its more famous neighbors.

From the Whitepine Creek Trailhead (2,800 ft), follow Whitepine Creek Trail (#1582) approximately 2.7 miles to its junction with Wildhorse Creek Trail (#1592). Continue on Wildhorse Creek Trail to roughly 5,400 ft, directly west of the summit. Leave the trail here and scramble cross-country through meadows and around rock bands to gain the west ridge. From the ridge, ascend eastward toward the main summit ridge, then turn north, staying below the summit headwall, and scramble past blocky ledges (Class 2-3) to the summit pinnacle. Return the same way.

~16 miles round trip, ~5,400 ft elevation gain, 8,081 ft summit.
