The Black Mesa Loop is a moderately challenging route in the Superstition Wilderness, offering breathtaking views of Weaver's Needle and the surrounding mountains. The easiest access to the route is via First Water Trailhead, from which there is a .3 mile access trail that will bring you to the start of the route. The FKT route starts at the Dutchman's Trail (#104) junction and follows the trail for 3.9 miles south. At the Black Mesa Trail (#241) junction, turn left (northwest) and continue for 3 miles. This will be the longest sustained climb in the CC direction. From the top of Black Mesa, you'll encounter a forest of Jumping Cholla Cactus, so watch your step! Then turn left (south) onto the Second Water Trail (#236) at the junction. Continue 1.5 miles on #236 until you reach the Dutchman's Trail junction, completing the loop.
Notes: The access path to and from the trailhead is not included in the FKT route.
These instructions are specifically for the Counter Clockwise direction.
There is not typically water access along the route, so plan your water supply accordingly.
