Description

Trail running has had a storied and competitive history in the Grand Canyon. But while the popular R2R2R trails receive a lot of attention, less attention is paid towards running the mountains inside the Canyon itself. Brahma Temple is one of these. The route begins with descending the South Kaibab trail, crossing the bridge over the Colorado River, and running past Phantom Ranch. Just past the ranch is a turnoff sign, where runners should turn right and begin the climb up. After a few miles on singletrack trail, hop off trail and begin the cross-country trek towards the obvious notch in the ridge. This is where the scrambling on sharp limestone begins. From here, you will traverse a number of canyon walls. There are cairns out there showing the way so pay attention. There is one headwall section with a few existing ropes to help ascend/ descent the steeper walls. Scrambling should not exceed 4th class, however, a move or two greatly depends on the condition of the rope and where it has been installed. Be prepared to bushwhack through some cacti to reach the true summit of the temple. There is a summit register. Be sure to enjoy the spectacular views before turning around and beginning the journey back. Have fun and be sure to bring enough water!
