This is one of the most scenic routes along the Chamonix valley starting at Les Houches just across the river. The starting point is the GR5 (and HexaTrek) point no 1 at Les Houches (pic 1). The route follows the GR5 up past Parc de Merlet and continues to Refuge Bellachat before coming to the rim and Le Brevent. This is by far the most elevation of the route, 1500 m in 9 km and pose ever more magnificent views of the Chamonix valley below, as well as glaciers on the other side. After the lift station you are still on GR5 but have to turn right following the ski slopes from Col de Brevent on the Planpraz-Brevent trail. Both along the rim and on the slopes there is snow well into the early summer months.
At Planpraz (11 km) catch the start (end) of Grand Balcon Sud an iconic trail mostly above tree line, with spectacular views of the valley. This trail is one of the most popular hiking trails in Chamonix and is well know from the UTMB that uses this section toward the end of the race. Follow Grand Balcon past several lift stations, this is a well visited skiing paradise in the winter season. At Flégrére it can be a little difficult to follow the trail since there are many different ones past the restaurants, stations and other buildings. You need to be well above the lake. Follow the Grand Balcon a further 4 km to Châlet des Chécerys (19 km) and head down toward Argentière on the Chemin des Grands Bois. This is a very technical decent and it takes you all the way to the main street (Rue Charlet Straton) of Argentière where the route ends. From here you can return to Chamonix, Les Houches, and other places by train or bus.
This route is only meant for going south to north since the elevation is far more prominent in this direction.
