Croatian Hiking Trail (HPO) is the longest and most popular hiking trail in Croatia. It was envisioned and opened by Croatian Mountaineering Association (HPS) in year 2000 during the 125 year anniversary of organized mountaineering in Croatia.
It consists of 158 most attractive peaks scattered all over the country divided in 20 geographical sections, through the mainland and including it's more prominant islands. There is no official trail connecting all these mountains. To complete it one has to climb them all on foot in no particular order. It's allowed to use other means of transport between mountains and islands, other then hiking and running (or swimming), but it has to be done under your own power - cycling and paddling. The peaks have to be climbed on foot whether or not that specific peak can be reached with a bike. Cycling can be used as means of transport only to the logical trailhead.
Croatian Mountaineering Association publishes booklets containing spaces for stamps that were placed on all 158 mountain peaks. Climbs can also be proven with a photo showing the person that climbed it and some easily recognisable feature or landmark. There are also many published guidebooks on the subject.
