The Domitian Way (Via Domitia) is a Roman road built from 118 BC onwards to link Italy to the Iberian Peninsula by crossing Narbonne Gaul.
According to some legends, the Domitian Way is said to take up a route created by Heracles (Hercules), the Heraclean Way2.
It was created in order to make a network of existing roads coherent, from 118 BC onwards, at the instigation of the Roman general Cneus Domitius Ahenobarbus, whose name it bears. This road was to ensure communications with Rome and to allow the installation and the circulation of garrisons protecting the cities which became Roman. The Roman colony of Narbo Martius (Narbonne) was founded on this route and became the most important city in southern Gaul.
