An epic quasi classic fell running round in one of the most amazing alpine trail running playgrounds in Australia!
Summitting the east and western most peaks in the Mt Field National Park - ironically named Mt Field East, and Mt Field West - along with Naturalist Peak, Rodway Range and the Watcher, and passing by some absolutely iconic lakes, historic huts, and rope tow ski fields. The route mostly follows established tracks and a little bit of road, and takes a direct off track b-line route from the Watcher to Naturalist peak. This off track section includes very steep scrambles on sometimes loose scree and turf, and requires strong navigation (inc compass) and complex mountain route finding skills. An alternate to this off track section is on established tracks via K-Col. Note, not all tracks are well marked, and experience with following faint tracks and being able to re-find the track if you do get off it is essential.
A proper alpine adventure, the entire route is above 800m elevation, and the majority above 1,000m - so good weather in the warmer months is recommended. And taking weather proof and warm layers, and survival gear to wait up to 24hrs for a rescue, and a PLB or ability to call for a rescue when out of phone reception is also highly recommended.
Plenty of water in the creeks and lakes, and treatment is probably worthwhile.
Some info on most of the trails can be found here: Mount Field East via Lake Nicholls | Parks & Wildlife Service Tasmania Mount Field West | Parks & Wildlife Service Tasmania
Please note the track from Lake Fenton to Lake Webster has been removed from modern maps, but is definitely there and was better maintained than some of the other tracks.
