Description

The Elkhorn 100 is a now-defunct race that started at the World's Largest Elkhorn Arch in Afton, Wyoming and finished 100 miles later at the elkhorn arches on Jackson Hole's Town Square.  The race was held in 2022 and 2023.  Due to heavy permitting requirements coupled with very limited participation the race is no longer being held.   The  supported-FKT is currently held by Cody Draper with a time of 27:35 in 2022. That year's course was much more difficult than the 2023 version.  The 2023 version is being submitted for the official FKT route for safety reasons.  Let's just say the 2023 route provides fewer Type III "fun" moments. This route heads east from Afton up Swift Creek to the Periodic Spring, a famous fresh-water geyser, then doubles back a mile or so to the N. Fork Swift Creek Trail. This trail takes you to Grover Park, and Turnerville, WY.  Next is N. Fork Willow Creek, McDougal Pass and a short out-and-back to stunning Cabin Creek Peak. The route then connects to the Way Trail to Meadow Creek, then crosses the mighty Greys River near the famous Box Y Ranch.  Next you will head up Dead Man Canyon to Telephone Hollow and the Little Greys (mile 50).  The final major climb comes on Pickle Pass, and the route descends Willow Creek to the Hoback River and  Hwy 189 with distant views of the Grand Teton. Unfortunately, here you pound pavement for about 9 miles through Hoback Junction and then north parallel to Hwy 89 to Game Creek (for me, this was the most challenging/boring part of the course).  Up Game Creek to another minor pass, then down Cache Creek into the Town of Jackson and the finish.  I have a few buckles and maybe a t-shirt or two left over for anyone who completes the route by foot in under 40 hours.  Contact me at jasonlwooden at gmail if you qualify.  Free while supplies last!
