Description

The Firefly Trail is a long distance, paved greenway built along the historic Georgia Railroad corridor, connecting Athens to Union Point.  When fully completed, it will span about 39 miles through multiple small towns in northeast Georgia.  Sections of the trail are currently open in Athens, Winterville, Maxeys, Crawford, and Union Point, with plans to close the remaining gaps.  The route blends urban trailheads and quiet rural stretches, passing through wooded areas, farmland, and historic downtowns.  Terrain is mostly flat to gently rolling, and surfaces vary slightly be segment, but the open portions are smooth and well maintained.  It's ideal for point-to-point efforts or long out-and-backs, with a unique mix of natural beauty, small town charm, and railroad history.
