The route starts at the beach in the town of Voltri, near Genova and ends at the Capanna Margherita, the highest structure in Europe. The first section of the route is done on a bicycle to traverse the plains of Piedmont. At Pont Saint Martin, the main climb begins as one goes up to Gressoney. Once in the Gressoney-Staffal area there are many trails and ski slopes where one transitions to skis to climb toward Lysjoch, ascending via the final descent of the Mezzalama skimo race. After Lysjoch, one follows the standard route to Punta Gnifetti / Signalkuppe / Capanna Margherita.
