The 40-mile loop is an exceptional trail running route that offers an unforgettable experience combining natural beauty, history, and culture while connecting two important bridges in the New York City area: the George Washington Bridge and the Tappan Zee Bridge.
What makes this route special is that you literally start in an urban metro area (Cabrini Blvd and W180th St) cross a bridge and connect to a trail, the Long Path in the Palisades Interstate Park in New Jersey. Then halfway through the run you cross another bridge and connect to the Old Croton Aqueduct State Historic Park trail on the New York side of the Hudson River. This feature allows runners to explore different landscapes, from the rugged cliffs of the Palisades to the serene riverbanks of the Hudson, making the route both challenging and diverse.
Throughout the route, runners can enjoy breathtaking views of the Hudson River from various locations such as the Rockefeller Lookout, Alpine Lookout, the Women's Federation Monument, the State Line Lookout (which features a café and restrooms), Mercy College, Untermyer Park & Grecian Gardens, and Van Cortlandt Park. These viewpoints offer panoramic views of the river and its surroundings, allowing runners to fully appreciate the natural beauty of the area.
Additionally, this route passes through several charming river towns such as Piermont, Irvington, Dobbs Ferry, and Yonkers, which add a cultural touch to the trail running experience. Overall, the 40-mile loop is a challenging but rewarding trail running experience that allows runners to explore some of the most beautiful parts of the area just north of New York City.
