The Geraldton to Mingenew route is a 103km point-to-point route located in the Mid West region of Western Australia. It connects the coastal city of Geraldton with the inland farming town of Mingenew. The entire route sits within Southern Yamatji Country. The route begins at the HMAS Sydney II Memorial in Geraldton (-28.773152, 114.616050) and finishes at the Transwa bus stop in the main street of Mingenew (-29.189858, 115.441360). The course follows established public roads throughout, comprising a mix of sealed and gravel surfaces. It follows Edward Road and Arthur Road out of Geraldton, Allanooka Springs Road for the majority of the distance, and Depot Hill Road into Mingenew.
The start point, the HMAS Sydney II Memorial, is Australia's national memorial to HMAS Sydney II and overlooks the city, harbour and Indian Ocean. From Geraldton, the route heads inland across open agricultural country. The first 40 km is relatively flat and passes near the Walkaway Wind Farm. Strong coastal winds are a defining feature of the region and have shaped the distinctive bent trees visible along parts of the route. Beyond Walkaway, the route enters the rolling breakaway landscapes characteristic of the Mid West region, with red escarpments, granite outcrops and expansive cropping country. Depending on the season, runners may encounter fields of wheat, canola and lupins, as well as displays of native wildflowers.
Approaching Mingenew, the route passes Depot Hill Reserve on the Irwin River, a heritage-listed site established in 1846 as a watering point along an early stock route and later used as a World War II army training area. The reserve is now recognised for its natural and cultural heritage and offers views across the surrounding breakaway country.
The route reflects the longstanding connection between coast and inland in the Mid West's agricultural economy. It begins near Geraldton's port and grain export facilities and passes through the broadacre farming country that supplies them, before finishing at Mingenew, known regionally as "The Grain Centre" and home to one of the largest inland grower-fed grain receival sites in the Southern Hemisphere. In doing so, the route follows a landscape corridor linking paddock, rail and port across the region.
As two established communities connected by a continuous road corridor, Geraldton and Mingenew provide clear and memorable start and finish points for a repeatable point-to-point challenge. The Geraldton to Mingenew route provides a logical, repeatable and accessible point-to-point challenge that showcases the landscapes, history and agricultural character of Western Australia's Mid West. It also provides representation for a large area of regional Western Australia that is currently absent from the Fastest Known Time route database.
