The Golden Eagle Trail was praised by Tom Thwaites as “the best day hike in Penn’s Woods”. This very rugged and scenic loop trail is found near the village of Cammal in Lycoming County, and it climbs vigorously from the bottom to the top of beautiful Pine Creek Gorge.
The loop runs through a portion of Tiadaghton State Forest on the east side of Pine Creek Gorge. The trail also traverses Wolf Run Wild Area.
You can start anywhere on the loop but the best option is to take the access trail off of road 414. There is ample parking available on the other side of the road. The access trail is a little under a half mile long. You’ll run into the intersection of the loop and see the orange blazes. Then you can either head clockwise or counterclockwise. The entire loop is orange blazed.
There are 3 key intersections on the loop where you’ll have to go through appropriate direction. The loop essentially has 2 big climbs with some flatter stuff in between. There are just enough rocks and roots that you’ll have to stay switched on throughout. The trail also crosses some creeks several times so it may be slippery.
The village of Slate Run is close by. There is a hotel, restaurant and general store. There are other trails in the area, also a popular rail trail. There is also a beautiful river. Highly recommend spending some time here!
