Description

The GR 440, also called Tour de la Montagne Limousine, is an official French long-distance hiking trail. It forms a loop, covering about 207 km with 4,900 m of elevation gain. As an official GR route, it is very well-marked with the classic white-and-red trail signs, making navigation straightforward.

The trail crosses the Monédières massif and the Millevaches plateau, offering varied terrain including small roads, gravel paths, and forest trails. Landscapes alternate between wild forests, heathlands, peat bogs, deciduous woods, and traditional villages. Cultural and natural highlights include chapels, traditional farms, and famous viewpoints in the Monédières such as the Suc au May. Wildlife is abundant, with chances to see roe deer, foxes, or even wildcats.

This is a challenging long-distance loop with medium mountain terrain.
