Description

A beautiful route around the idyllic Dutch village of Rhenen. It's special because it combines the two main natural parks that surrounds it (Grebbeberg and Kwintelooijen). The start and finish of this route is at the war cemetery on top of the Grebbeberg. This is the location a WWII battle ground and memorial. You start by following the path through the forest to the north into Rhenen and through the fields into Kwintelooijen on the other side. This area is quite hilly and offers several views while being part of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug (the hill ridge of Utrecht). Kwintelooijen itself is a former sand-excavation area turned into a recreation park. At the top of the stairs there are great views of the area. After that, the route loops back through another forest area and around Rhenen. The last part of the route you'll follow the river Rhine back toward Grebbeberg. Here you experience another set of steps up the hill toward the starting point. A very diverse and idyllic route, especially for Dutch standards! There are several nice vistas and beautiful forests. The route is a mix of gravel roads, trails and paved biking paths.
