Description

Kongeveien over Filefjell is the name of the old road over Filefjell (a mountain area between Lærdal and Valdres in Norway). Filefjell is one of the historical main routes between Western Norway and Western Norway. Kongevegen over Filefjell was the first road between Eastern and Western Norway. The route travels from Vangsmjøsa lake, over the Filefjell mountain plateau and down to Lærdal village by the Sognefjord.

Due to the locally wet and marshy landscape at the bottom of the valley, the old road goes further up the mountain then the modern paved road today, and the old path is still used for mountain hiking. Th first postal route was laid here in 1647. The road received official status as main road in 1791.

The highest point is at 1250 m asl. The route goes through some of the most amazing nature, and experience rich cultural heritage sire and monuments on the way including the Øye and Borgund stav churches  and the Vindhella road.
