The White Mountains Crossing is a point-to-point traverse across the heart of the Lefka Ori (White Mountains) in western Crete, Greece. The route follows the well-marked E4 European Long Distance Path from Xyloskalo on the Omalos Plateau to the Askifou Plateau, linking two of the island's best-known mountain gateways.
Beginning at the famous entrance to Samaria Gorge, the trail immediately climbs toward Kallergi Refuge before entering the high alpine landscape of the Lefka Ori. The route continues across remote limestone terrain, passing beneath some of Crete's highest peaks and through one of the most spectacular mountain environments in Greece.
The traverse combines long climbs, technical rocky sections, exposed alpine terrain, and fast descending singletrack before reaching the Askifou Plateau. Throughout the route, runners experience a continuous mountain crossing without leaving the E4 trail.
Although well marked, the route is demanding due to its elevation gain, rough terrain, exposure to weather, and limited water availability outside the mountain refuge. It is best attempted in late spring, summer, or early autumn when snow is absent from the high mountains.
This route offers a logical and repeatable crossing of the Lefka Ori and showcases one of the finest long mountain traverses in Greece.
