Typically completed as an 11 Stage/Day Hiking trail through the "Wild Heart of Austria", the route travels through three internationally recognised protected wilderness areas (Kalkalpen Natonal Park, Gesäuse National Park and the Dürrenstein Wilderness Area) with parts of the trail belonging to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Beech Forests.

The Trail goes through the historical home of the Lynx. Currently, due to conservation and reintroduction efforts there are believed to be approximately seven currently living in the area.
The Trail itself winds through several old growth forests, as well as a number of mountain passes. Wild camping is not allowed within the National Parks, but as an established multi day walking trail there are plenty of accomodation stops along the way, including Hotels/Guesthouses, Mountain Huts and a Campsite. At several sections the trail passes through towns allowing for resupply or meetings with Crew/support.
