The Lustrafjorden loop
Lustrafjorden is a 40 km long fjord arm at the innermost end of Sognefjorden, located in one of the most beautiful areas of Norway. At the very end of the fjord lies the village of Skjolden. Beyond this point rise Norway’s highest mountain regions, with numerous peaks above 2000 meters and massive glaciers, including Hurrungane and Jotunheimen.
The fjord forms the final section of Sognefjorden, the world’s longest ice-free fjord, stretching 205 km from the ocean to Skjolden.
This route is a full loop following the road around the Lustrafjord, starting and finishing at the ferry crossing between Ornes and Solvorn. The complete loop is approximately 73.5 km.
The route starts at the ferry quay in idyllic Solvorn. From there, the road climbs steadily for a couple of kilometers until reaching the highest point of the route at around 300 meters above sea level. Then follows a gentle descent down to sea level at Gaupne, after which the roads are mostly flat with small rolling variations all the way to Skjolden. (There are three tunnels on this section, but two of them can be bypassed by running outside.)
The road from Skjolden to Ornes — often referred to as “The Romantic Road” — is more varied in elevation and includes three unlit tunnels, so remember to bring flashlight and reflective vest. The final tunnel can be bypassed by running outside.
