FKT: Castello (Pontechianale) – Monviso Summit
Starting from the alpine village of Castello, in the municipality of Pontechianale, this FKT follows one of the most historic and aesthetic lines to the summit of Monviso (3,841 m), the unmistakable Re di Petra ("King of Stone") of the Cottian Alps. Rising nearly 2,300 vertical metres from the Varaita Valley, the route offers an uninterrupted ascent from forests and alpine meadows to one of the most iconic summits in the Alps.
Unlike the more frequented southern approach from Pian del Re, the Castello route is quieter, wilder, and historically significant. It climbs through the Vallone di Vallanta before reaching the Bivacco Boarelli, continues to the Bivacco Andreotti, and finally tackles the exposed scrambling sections of the normal route to the summit. The final section requires sure-footed movement over rock, hands-on scrambling, and solid mountain experience, making this a true alpine challenge rather than a simple trail run.
Monviso dominates the western Piemonte skyline with over 2,000 metres of prominence, standing in remarkable isolation above the surrounding peaks. Its distinctive pyramidal shape has made it one of the most recognizable mountains in Europe for centuries, serving as a landmark for travellers, climbers, and local communities alike. The mountain also overlooks the headwaters of the Po River, Italy's longest river, whose source lies on the opposite side of the massif at Pian del Re.
Castello is the logical starting point for this FKT. As the highest permanent village in the Varaita Valley accessible by road, it provides the shortest direct approach to Monviso from the west while remaining a true valley-floor start. Beginning at the start of the trail (where water is available) ensures a clear, repeatable, and easily verifiable start point that connects the inhabited valley with the highest summit of the massif in one continuous effort.
This FKT celebrates one of the finest summit pushes in the Italian Alps: a demanding route that combines endurance, technical terrain, and spectacular scenery, linking a historic mountain village with the highest peak of the Cottian Alps in a single, uninterrupted ascent.
