The trail is an out-and-back climb of Mount Paiko, in the heart of the mythical Pella region (where, among other things, Alexander the Great was born and raised). Starting from an old power line near the village of Eleftherochori, you will be crossing a very rugged, rocky, dry terrain, and may not see another person during the entire run. Turtles, however, are common sights, and according to rumors there are also wolves roaming the area.
The trail itself isn't always well maintained, but occasionally you will find red points, yellow stripes or bottle caps nailed to a tree that indicate the direction. At the top, however, all bets are off, and you'll need a modicum of orientation skills to make it to the end. You'll be rewarded with a 360 degree view that, on a good day, will reach all the way to the Agean sea. A metal statue of a hiker marks the summit, making it impossible to miss.
There are some variations of the route along the way, all of which are fine, as long as you reach the summit and, die aesthetic reasons, complete at least 20k.
