Description

Translated from the official website of the Austrian Alpine Club (https://www.alpenverein.at/weitwanderer/weitwanderwege/nordalpenweg.php)

The Nordalpenweg 01 is the most scenically spectacular long-distance hiking trail in Austria, running from Lake Neusiedl or the Vienna Woods to Lake Constance through the Northern Limestone Alps. It was inaugurated in 1975 and passes through the seven federal states of Burgenland, Lower Austria, Styria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Tyrol, and Vorarlberg. The trail is largely alpine, reaching altitudes of up to 3000 meters in the Dachstein and Hochkönig areas, as well as on the Zugspitze and in the Lechtal Alps. In addition to alpine equipment, hikers need surefootedness, good fitness, and in some areas, a head for heights and good orientation skills. The Nordalpenweg is also the alpine variant of the European long-distance hiking trail E4.
