Route: Paradox Trail (CO)

Location

Utah, US
Distance

Description

The Paradox Trail is 105 mile long route stretching from near Nucla, Colorado, to the flank of the La Sal Mountains near Moab, Utah. Along with the Kokopelli Trail and the Tabeguache Trail, it rounds out the big three trails established by the Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Trail Association (COPMOBA). Together, these trails form the "Grand Loop", a grueling 360 mile backcountry system.

The Paradox Trail was established in 1995. It consists mostly of jeep roads, with some 2WD roads, cattle tracks and trails as well, and just 2 miles of pavement. The route is sparsely marked with carsonite posts, and can be difficult to follow. Existing maps don't accurately show all the old roads. Charles Corfield carefully studied available information, including aerial imagery, to come up with a detailed GPS track, which he followed during his 2011 thru-run of the route.

As long as it doesn’t snow too much this week, I’m planning on running the Paradox March 6-7 supported by my amazing wife.

Surprised to have service up here near Buckeye res... not going to make it happen this weekend due to so much mud. We’re just going to scope out the area for future adventures.

Oh yes, mud could be horrific on that route!  It's too bad Charles never did a report from our trip several years ago.  At that time, route finding was definitely an issue, and Charles had done an incredible job of creating a GPS track from various sources, including just looking at GoogleEarth.  Hopefully it's easier now, with more traffic and better GPS technology.
