Description

The journey begins at the Basilica of San Nicola in Bari, a symbolic place of pilgrimage in Puglia, and crosses the ancient territory of Peucezia. It traverses lush olive groves characterizing the coastal plain, vast steppes of the Murge plateau, patches of woodland, and karst formations (ravines and gorges), creating the enchanting rocky landscape that hosts towns like Gravina in Puglia and Matera.

Covering 170 km in seven stages, the route reveals the rich cultural heritage of Apulia and Lucania through cathedrals and medieval towns such as Bitetto, Cassano delle Murge, Santeramo in Colle, and Altamura, with an additional stop at the Sanctuary of Picciano.

The Via Peuceta is ultimately a journey of discovery featuring rock-hewn churches, Greek and Roman ruins, historical farmhouses (masserie), trulli, dry-stone walls, and extraordinary gastronomy offering genuine flavors that evoke the authentic rural tradition.
