This incredible long-distance run follows the eastern and southern coastline of Spain, beginning in the border town of Portbou on the Mediterranean and finishing in La LÃnea de la Concepción, just north of Gibraltar on the Atlantic edge.
The route is designed to stay as close to the coast as possible, weaving together a dynamic mix of coastal paths, promenades, cliffside trails, and coastal roads. Runners will experience a constantly changing backdrop of seaside villages, sandy beaches, rugged headlands, and bustling coastal cities.
Terrain Breakdown:
-
Coastal Trails & Footpaths:
Expect rocky, uneven terrain with stunning sea views. Many sections involve cliff-top tracks, beachside boardwalks, and narrow gravel paths that hug the Mediterranean coastline through regions like Costa Brava, Costa Dorada, and Costa del Sol.
-
Tarmac & Coastal Roads:
Some segments will require running on quieter local roads and coastal highways, especially when connecting more remote paths or moving through built-up areas like Valencia, Alicante, or Málaga.
-
Urban Waterfronts & Promenades:
Cities and towns along the way will provide smoother surfaces – ideal for recovery miles – with palm-lined promenades, marinas, and beachfront esplanades offering both shelter and spectacle.
-
Elevation & Challenges:
While much of the terrain is low elevation, some sections (especially early on in Catalonia and parts of AndalucÃa) involve short but steep climbs and descents along rugged coastal cliffs and coves. Weather conditions may also shift dramatically — from dry heat to coastal winds — depending on the region and season.
