Description

The Resurrection High Route parallels the popular Resurrection Pass trail in the Kenai Mountains of South Central Alaska. Starting at the Hope Point trailhead and ending at the Summit Creek trailhead, the route stays above treeline for over 30 miles of ridges, passes, and summits. Sweeping views of the Kenai Peninsula, Chugach Mountains and Alaska Range greet travelers in addition to stunning alpine tarns, and classic Alaskan tundra.

Start by climbing the Hope Point trail until reaching the summit ridgeline. From there take a left and follow the border of the Chugach National Forest and the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge North. Advanced route finding skills are needed especially in thick fog. Be prepared for all types of weather and copious amounts of wildlife. The area is known for it's high number of bears both black and brown with a number of known charges and close calls known in the area. Come prepared with bear spray and expect to run in to multiple bears along the route.

The route stays as high as possible (using goat trails for ease on occasion) on the ridges and summits until reaching Abernathy Creek where there are two options for exit to Resurrection Pass: either stay high on ridges and drop to the trail at Resurrection Pass Proper or follow a sub ridge and rejoin the trail at the junction of Abernathy and Afanasa creeks. Either option will involve little to no bushwacking but more climbing and scrambling on scree fields. Once hitting Resurrection Pass, follow the faint trail up Harry's Pass over into East Creek. The by now well worn trail will then climb up and into Summit Creek where 3.5 miles of smooth downhill trail will finish at the southern end of Summit Lake. Finish with ice cream from Summit Lake Lodge.
