Description

Running "Up" Illinois from the lowest point to the highest. The lowest point is located at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, specifically at Fort Defiance State Park on the southern tip of the state, with an elevation of 279 feet above sea level. The highest point is Charles Mound at 1,235 feet above sea level, located in the northwest corner of the state, near the town of Galena, and less than 1/2 mile from the Illinois/Wisconsin border. This route is open course; athletes may select their own route from the lowest to highest point.

Charles Mound is on private property and only open to the public a few weekends each year (a total of 10 days in 2025), and only during daylight hours.
