Saar-Hunsrück-Steig (Perl to Boppard)
Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany · about 378 km · about 10,500 to 11,000 m of climbing
The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig is a waymarked premium long-distance trail from Perl on the Moselle, at the French and Luxembourg border, to Boppard on the Rhine. It was voted Germany’s most beautiful hiking trail in 2009 and 2017. Most of it runs on natural paths, passing the Saarschleife, the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park, the Erbeskopf (816 m, the highest point in Rhineland-Palatinate), the Geierlay suspension bridge and the Ehrbachklamm, before descending into the UNESCO Upper Middle Rhine Valley.
Start: official trailhead in Perl. Finish: official trail end in Boppard (St.-Remigius-Platz). Route: the official waymarked main route as in the uploaded GPX (SHS2026.GPX), excluding the Trier branch.
Why it merits an FKT
The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig is one of Germany’s best-known long-distance trails, fully waymarked, well documented and accessible by train at both ends. Its length, sustained climbing and mix of terrain make it a demanding multi-day objective.
