Starting from Windy Saddle Trailhead, the Seven Devils loop cirques the Seven Devils Peaks (He Devil, She Devil, Devils Throne, Tower of Babel, The Ogre to name a few) for a scenic tour of the Hells Canyon wilderness. The popular backpacking route, even more epic as a run, features alpine lakes, rocky ridgelines, talus fields and open savannas of ponderosa pine that give way to larch and fir forests at higher elevations. Multiple seasons of forest fires have reshaped the landscape, and there’s evidence of different stages of recovery everywhere you look. The highlight of the loop is an out and back segment to Dry Diggins lookout. From the deck of the structure, views stretch thousands of feet down to the Snake River, and into Oregon’s Wallowa Mountains. We ran the loop clockwise which saves the largest climbs for last, but provides a very fun, mellow start.
