Scenic 99 miles on blacktop Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia. You can buy your national park pass ahead of time online recreation.gov. Also obtain free backcountry permit at https://www.recreation.gov/permits/4675336 Backcountry permit is required for overnight staying in the park, it registers your car. Skyline Drive does not have a wide shoulder. Most cars were courteous slowing down driving around me and I also did not mind running on the grass. Everyone I encountered were very friendly. I was offered a ride which was very tempting. Skyline Drive is wide and has lots of overlooks with breathtaking views. You will see beautiful sunset and sunrise no matter where you are on the course. At night you might see some stargazers at the overlooks and some people might be camping right at parking lots along the Skyline drive. I saw few dears, raccoons and a rabid at night no bear. Make sure you have plenty reflectors, red light and headlamp obviously. There are three visitor's centers on the course open during the season April to November. First one 4 miles in just a restroom no food. Second is mile 24 has snacks and grill bar close 6 pm. Third is mile 44 Skyland dining has gift/snack shop close 9pm. Skyland dining also has Starbucks coffee close 6 pm but dining is open till 9 pm takes phone order and take out. Start is Front Royal the north end of the park. Start at the Dickey Ridge Trail parking which is mile marker .24 mile. (You can walk to mile 0 at intersection of Skyline Drive and Stonewall Jackson Highway to make 100 miles). Run to mile marker 50 turn around and run to your start point. It is a beautiful scenic and easy run until you get tired.
