Follow the continuous ‘Source to Sea’ National Trail along the ENTIRE length of one of the most iconic rivers in the world. From the source of the River Thames in the Cotswolds (Thames Head Stone, Kemble) to The North Sea in the Isle of Grain (Final England Coast Path sign, Grain Coastal Park). Travel along the ‘Thames Path’ until Woolwich Foot Tunnel, where the route continues on the ‘Thames Path Extension’ / ‘King Charles III England Coast Path: Woolwich to Grain’.
Beginning on relatively unkept trail, passing through peaceful water meadows, fields, historic towns and cities, and many lovely villages, where you can often bathe safely in the Thames. Progress through one of the most multi-cultural cities in the world, before continuing out of East London, following the south bank of the river, to explore the natural and cultural heritage of this uniquely diverse stretch of coast.
Pass through a working landscape including industrial complexes, Queen Elizabeth II Bridge, and the largest pylon in Europe. Along this final stretch of coast, there are many historical points of interest, including World War naval and military installations, and working maritime activity. Continuing to head east out of Gravesend, you proceed by a live firing, before progressing onto a tidal path, then into remote grazing marsh and the RSPB Cliffe Pools Nature Reserve with 12 miles of complete wilderness, mudflats, and pocket beaches inaccessible by car between Cliffe and Allhallows. Finally you head inland around Creeks before the North Sea comes into view. Finish on beach in Grain, looking out to the North Sea.
