'Streek GR Groene Gordel' shows you around the Brussels region through 3 subregions: 'Pajottenland', 'de Brabantse Kouters' and 'Dijleland'. A surprisingly green route, passing by Medieval castles, beautiful forests, authentic pubs and rolling farm lands.
The 'Streek-GR Groene Gordel' starts in Halle, the pilgrimage town in the 'Zennevallei' on the edge of the 'Pajottenland'. Going east, you will pass by the old paper mill 'Herisemmolen', a pearl of industrial heritage. Via the large Sonian Forest you end up in the aristocratic Park of Tervuren and the world-famous Africa Museum. While planes fly above your head, you go deeper into the Dijleland, past Kortenberg, Perk, Elewijt, finally entering 'de Brabantse Kouters' via the historic pearl Grimbergen. In Meise you pass by the National Botanical Garden, one of the largest plant collections in the world with 18,000 plant species. Further towards Asse, the landscape of Brueghel announces the 'Pajottenland' again. The imposing four-legged friend on the market square of Sint-Kwintens-Lennik is Prins, an ode to the Belgian Draught horse (aka Brabants trekpaard), because this region is the breeding ground for this renowned horse breed. In Gaasbeek you stand at the gate of the fabulous castle of Marquise Arconati Visconti. Once a real castle, until the countess transformed it into her dream palace a century ago. When Halle appears in the distance, the circle is complete.
Note that this route is a much longer circle around Brussels than Promenade Verte/De Groene Wandeling (The green walk) also on FKT.
