The Tahoe PCT 100 spans sections K and L of the Pacific Crest Trail in California. This section of the trail goes from Lower Echo Lake to where the PCT crosses CA state highway 49. After starting at Lower Echo Lake you will soon enter Desolation Wilderness which contains numerous stunning glacial lakes and granite peaks. After leaving Desolation Wilderness you will enter Tahoe National Forest and pass through Barker Pass and pass to the west of Palisades Tahoe Ski Resort. Continuing along the PCT you will pass to the east of Sugar Bowl Ski resort and cross Old Highway 40 and complete a short trail section before the crossing underneath the tunnels that go under Interstate 80. A few miles later you will pass through Castle Pass and begin some lower elevation travel. You will cross North Creek, White Rock Creek and then encounter a climb back to the ridge. There are numerous springs on this section. After you pass through Lacey Benchmark you will continue to Pass Creek near Jackson Meadows Reservoir. After a short climb you will descend into the Milton Creek drainage and eventually to the finish where PCT section L ends at the Highway 49 crossing.
- Desolation Wilderness permits are required year-round for both day and overnight use. For more information, please visit https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/ltbmu/recarea/?recid=11786
- This section of the PCT is multi-use. It is shared by hikers, dogs, and horseback riders. Bear canisters and wilderness permits are required within the Desolation Wilderness boundary. A permit is not required within the Granite Chief Wilderness for backpacking on the PCT. Both National Forest areas require a campfire permit for a fire or stove use while backpacking.
