Description

This route presents a stunning but possibly logistically challenging point-to-point adventure featuring a long and lengthy portion of ridge and trail above tree-line, summitting six peaks and passing by several iconic lakes.

It begins with the classic approach to the Truchas Peaks most commonly and consistently used by locals, tagging each of the five "summits" that comprise the group (North Truchas, Medio Truchas, West Truchas, South Truchas or Truchas Peak, and Little South Truchas). A steady trail leads to the scenic Trampas Lakes before a steep and challenging climb up a north-facing couloir to arrive on the ridge just east of Sheepshead Peak. From there the route follows the ridgeline to the east, summitting UN 12900, before following the ridge south toward N. Truchas and Medio Truchas. The approach to N. Tuchas features a short but impressive (and exposed!) climb.

From Medio Truchas one follows a spur on the ridgeline to West Truchas, doubling back to Medio Truchas before continuing south along the ridge to Truchas Peak or South Truchas and Little South Truchas Peaks. From Little South one follows the established and well-marked trail along Trailriders Wall, taking the fork to the right leading to the saddle below and east of East Pecos Baldy and due directly north of Pecos Baldy Lake. From there one follows Trail 257 past Round Mountain and through several high altitude meadows before taking Trail 25 (Beatty Trail) to the TH for Jack's Creek.
