The rock/run traverse, called the Trans Cuillin, West to East traverse of 70 Cuillin tops (75km & 9000 meters of ascent) was devised by Rob Woodall, who attempted it in 2001 but unfortunately, due to bad weather, didn’t manage to finish.

It is believed James Gibson is the first person to have completed it, adding it to the growing list of long-distance challenge records he holds.

James said: “It’s been on my mind for many years, since first reading an article in the Fellrunner magazine about long days out in the Cuillins. It attracted me as it’s an epic 24-hour challenge that has never been completed.

“I had been speaking to Rob about having an attempt and he kindly gave me lots of information in return. I spent a lot of time (years) reccing the route and it certainly paid off.

“The route itself is extremely technical in places (Black Cuillins/Clach Glas traverse) and involves a lot of climbing & scrambling, something that also drew me to the challenge.

“I managed to complete the Black Cuillin ridge, including every single top and some out and backs in great weather (cool, dry and good visibility) in 5.5 hours, which I was very surprised with.

“From here you make your way over to Sgurr na Stri, an amazing view point of the Cuillins, before going up Bla Bheinn and onto the technical Clach Glas ridge, followed by all the tops on the Red Cuillins.

“The final leg of the route traverses over Belig, the steep and savage Glas-Bheinn Mor and Beinn na Cro. It then finishes on Beinn na Caillich.
