Description

The aim of this route is to cross the Black Mountain, the southern foothills of the Massif Central, side to side, starting at the village of Labastide Rouairoux and finishing at the Saint Ferréol lake, following the GR7. This mountain, which owes its name to the vast coniferous forests that dot its slopes, has a rich history: exploited for its iron by the Romans, it was one of the refuges of the Cathar lords in the Middle Ages before becoming famous for its textile industry and one of the strongholds of the Resistance during the Second World War. The aim of this route is to cross the entire massif from east to west, following the 7th long-distance hiking trail (GR7). It crosses all the main points of interest in this massif: the Peyremaux rock, the highest point at the Pic of Nore (1211 m), the medieval village of Hautpoul, the Montagnès lake, the Lampy basin, and finally the  Saint Férréol lake, the main water reservoir for the Canal of Midi.
