The Veľká Fatra Ridge Trail (often referred to as the Veľká Fatra Mountain Traverse) is a long-distance hiking route that follows the main ridge of the Veľká Fatra National Park in central Slovakia. It is renowned for its remote wilderness, sweeping alpine meadows, dense beech and spruce forests, and panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges.
The full traverse typically stretches for around 42 km, and includes approximately 3500 meters of cumulative elevation gain. Most hikers complete it in two to three days, staying overnight in mountain huts such as Chata pod Borišovom or Hotel Kráľova studňa, while experienced trail runners often tackle the entire route in a single day.
Highlights of the route include:
- KrÞna (1,574 m) – one of the highest and most scenic peaks in the range.
- Ostredok (1,592 m) – the highest summit of Veľká Fatra.
- Ploská (1,532 m) – famous for its broad grassy summit.
- Vast open ridgelines offering uninterrupted 360° views.
- Rich wildlife, including red deer, chamois, lynx, wolves, and brown bears.
The trail is considered moderately to highly challenging, primarily due to its length, sustained climbs, and rapidly changing mountain weather rather than technical difficulty. In summer, hikers should carry sufficient water, as water sources along the ridge are limited. In winter, the route becomes a demanding alpine undertaking requiring appropriate mountaineering experience and equipment.
The Veľká Fatra Ridge Trail is widely regarded as one of Slovakia's most beautiful mountain traverses, offering a combination of solitude, unspoiled nature, and spectacular scenery that makes it a favorite among hikers, trail runners, and mountain enthusiasts.
