The Wai'anae Summit Trail (WST) follows the spine of the Wai'anae Range along the western side of O'ahu, creating one of the island's longest and demanding ridge traverses. The route runs roughly the length of the range, linking multiple summits and narrow ridgelines while staying almost entirely on the spine of the mountains. The route contains a combination of exposure and terrain variety across the entire traverse. Including long knife-edge ridges, steep choss climbs, and sections where ropes assist hikers over particularly steep or eroded terrain.
Despite its relatively modest elevation compared to traditional alpine routes, the WST feels remote and extremely demanding due to the rugged terrain, dense vegetation, and long stretches without easy access points.
