South Hams Way – May 2026

Day 1 – Thursday 21 May
I travelled from Leicester down to Totnes, parked at Dartington Park, and walked the 2 miles to join the trail. I set off on the South Hams Way at 16:40.

First leg: Totnes → just outside Ivybridge | 16:40 – 23:00
Distance: 23 miles
I wild camped overnight once I arrived. Temperatures were already climbing — it was shaping up to be the hottest weekend of the year so far.

Day 2 – Friday 22 May
Full day hiking: Ivybridge → Hope Cove
Distance: 43 miles
Crossed two tide-dependent rivers, which needed careful timing. The heat was intense — 32°C, not a breath of breeze, and very tough going. Wild camped again near Hope Cove.

Day 3 – Saturday 23 May
Another full day: Hope Cove → Ashprington
Distance: 47 miles
Took the ferry crossing at Salcombe Sands. Still hot, relentless sun and no shade for long stretches. Camped overnight at Ashprington.

Day 4 – Sunday 24 May
Final leg: Ashprington → Totnes / Dartington
Distance: 7 miles
Finished the route at 10:00, making the total journey time 2 days, 17 hours, 33 minutes. Walked back to the car and drove home.

Conditions: ☀️ 32°C, still air, scorching heat — honestly pretty brutal, but such a satisfying completion!
