BASIC INFO ABOUT THE SANTA FE TO TAOS THRU-HIKE

  • Santa Fe Plaza to Taos Plaza.

  • 132 miles on existing trails.

  • Can be done over a series of weekends. Or do it as day hikes and one-night overnights plus one two-night overnight.

  • Route is broken up into six Sections, each about 20 miles each. Each
    Section has 7-9 sub-sections.

  • Most of the thru-hike is above 9,000 feet elevation. Expect to do 2,000-3,000+ feet of elevation per day.

  • Has far more water than you’d think! 28% of the route is directly next to or within a few hundred feet of water. Goes right by 13 lakes and ponds.

  • Goes through wilderness and on remote trails. Expect occasional fallen trees and faint trails.

  • Resupply at SF2T members’ resupply right off the route in Tres Ritos (approx 1/2 way) or at Sipapu Ski & Summer Resort 2 miles down NM 518. You have to be a member to access the Members' Resupply.

  • Best months to do it are June, July, August, and September. Lower elevations can be done in May. October is nice, too.

  • Separate route for mountain bikers in development. Route shown here is not designed or intended for
    mountain bikes.

  • Highly recommended: Get the guidebook: The Santa Fe to Taos Thru-Hike Guidebook has 57 maps, 60 photos, and everything you’ll need to know to plan and complete the thru-hike, including detailed itineraries for doing the thru-hike over a series of weekends. Comments

I have a question for Pam about the design of this route: Why does the route take a big detour southeast towards Jack's Creek on the Cave Creek/Dockweiler trails and then back up to rejoin the Skyline Trail at Pecos Baldy Lake, rather than just stick to the more direct Skyline trail through that section? Is this for resupply purposes, to avoid deadfall, or some other reason?

It seems to me that for those attempting this route in a "fast" time, the more direct route staying on the Skyline trail would be preferable, and resupply at Jack's Creek would be an unnecessary detour. But perhaps I am missing something...

Also, where the route crosses the Santa Barbara Divide, why does the GPX track take the longer route (via Beatty's Trail) going over the divide, rather than the shorter and more direct route on the map? The direct route is shown as 0.3 miles on Caltopo vs 1.4 miles staying on Skyline to Beatty's trail and then making a big switchback to rejoin the West Fork trail to Santa Barbara campground.
